Product specifications database

Problem

A national retailer faced a significant challenge while migrating from WordPress to Shopify: integrating their product specifications and data into the new platform. Previously, this information was scattered across Excel, plain text, and images. This fragmented approach was not sustainable and would be even more cumbersome post-migration.

Solution

Deadwood Digital tackled this project in three strategic stages: database implementation, custom app development, and creation of custom Shopify sections.

Database Implementation

First, we gathered and converted the existing data into a format suitable for a database. Given the complex data structures, we chose MongoDB, leveraging its Compass component for its user-friendly interface. This choice empowers less tech-savvy staff to maintain the database, ensuring the solution’s longevity.

Custom App Development

We then developed a custom web app to connect this database to Shopify. This app periodically queries the database and updates Shopify with the relevant product specification data.

Custom Shopify Sections

To display the data accurately, we built custom front-end sections that interpret and render the information from the metafield.

Our solution stands out for its future-proof design. Should the retailer need to migrate to another Ecommerce platform or build a new site, our solution can be easily adapted. If you’re struggling with managing complex product data and need a seamless, scalable solution, contact us to discuss how we can help.
